The newly rebuilt 2,201 seat
auditorium at the Kursaal in Ostend, Belgium features a unique
audio installation by Ampco Belgium, combining four distinct
functions: sound reinforcement for ‘concert’ mode,
5.1 surround sound for ‘cinema’ mode, a voice
announcement system and Multi Channel Reverberation, with
MediaMatrix routing and processing.

Darling specified a left-center-right loudspeaker
system from Renkus-Heinz, consisting of a CT5/94K biamp speaker as the main center, and SR5/64 passive crossover speakers as the left and right mains. "We feel quite strongly that a left-center-right
cluster has the most flexibility in this type of applications,"
Darling explained. "It gives you the
option of high-quality speech intelligibility by using the
center cluster, solid stereo sound for amplified performance
and, in musical theater, the entire system comes into play."

"It's a widely variable-acoustic
space designed for symphony, which can also be used for a
variety of other performance types, such as jazz, light opera,
the spoken word, and so on," explains Murray.
It comes complete with its own sound system. "We
put in left/center/right loudspeaker cluster with Renkus-Heinz
speakers and Crown amplification," explains Rick Wells, formerly of McKay Conant Brook
Inc. the acoustician and A/V consultant, currently Wells is
with Multi-Media Consulting.

Degerlund says the high technology is essential: “ You
must have good sound for this standard of performers. We have
very good sound from Renkus-Heinz.” The main
left and right proscenium system comprises a pair each of STX7 and STX5L cabinets, while a centre pair of STX2 and six Reflex RFX121 full-range loudspeakers.

In the latter category, six SR5/6 full-range loudspeakers are ranged across the top of the proscenium
arch, with 18 TRC61 cabinets providing the surround elements and four SR62Hs
deployed as front fill speakers, rounded off by a pair of
Renkus-Heinz DRS18-1V subwoofers - one mounted in a catwalk, the other a portable
addition which is sited depending on the sonic requirements
of an individual production.
